One coat at six in the morning isn't sun protection. It's a habit.

Sunscreen needs to go back on every two hours, and more often if you're sweating. On a standard 7 to 3, that's four applications. Almost nobody on site does four. Most do one, in the dark, before the sun is even up, and then work straight through the worst UV of the day on it.

It isn't laziness. It's that reapplying is genuinely annoying when your hands are dirty, the tube is in the ute, and the stuff stings your eyes the second you start sweating in it.

UV sits in the same carcinogen class as asbestos.

That's not a slogan, it's the classification. The International Agency for Research on Cancer lists solar UV radiation as a Group 1 carcinogen, the same group as asbestos and tobacco. Every site in the country manages one of those obsessively and leaves the other to whatever's in your glovebox.

Straight answers.

Will my hands be too slippery to work?

No. It rubs in to a matte, non-greasy finish rather than an oily film, so your grip on tools, ladders and the wheel isn't affected. Wash your hands after applying, as you would with any sunscreen.

Does it sting when I start sweating?

It's a no-sting formula, which is the single most common thing people say about it in reviews. As with any sunscreen, don't apply it directly into the eyes, and rinse with water if it gets in.

How often do I actually have to put it on?

Every two hours, and more often if you're sweating heavily or towelling off. On a 7 to 3 that's before you start, at smoko, at lunch and mid-afternoon. It's water resistant for 40 minutes, not for the whole shift, and no sunscreen is.

Do I still need it on an overcast day?

Yes. UV isn't heat or light, so it gets through cloud, and it reflects off concrete, steel, water and sand. The rule is to use sun protection whenever the UV index is 3 or above, which on most Australian sites is most of the working day, most of the year.

Will it leave me white?

No. It's a clear zinc that rubs in without a white cast, so you can walk into the shops after work without looking like a cricketer from 1994.

How much should I be using?

More than you think. As a guide, about a teaspoon for the face and neck and a teaspoon per limb. Applying thinly is the most common way people end up with a fraction of the SPF on the label.

What's in it?

Zinc oxide 25% is the only active ingredient, so there are no chemical UV filters. It's organic, vegan, reef safe and Australian made, and it's listed on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods as AUST L 437243.

Always read the label and follow the directions for use. Sunscreen is only one part of sun protection: also wear protective clothing and a hat, seek shade and wear sunglasses. Reapply every two hours and after swimming, sweating or towel drying. Avoid contact with the eyes.
