Here's the part that stings worse than the sunscreen. When a child's skin barrier is compromised, which is exactly what eczema is, things that sit harmlessly on intact skin can get through and cause irritation. So when they say it burns, they usually aren't negotiating. It genuinely does.

The bit nobody explains at the chemist

Two sunscreens, two completely different jobs.

Chemical sunscreens work by being absorbed into the top layers of the skin, where the filters take the UV hit. That's the design. On skin with a healthy barrier most people never notice. On eczema-prone skin, where the barrier is already broken, there's much less standing between those ingredients and the nerve endings underneath.

Zinc oxide doesn't do that. It's a mineral that sits on the surface and reflects UV away, so there's far less going into the skin in the first place. The National Eczema Society notes that many people with eczema find mineral sunscreens less irritating than chemical ones, though it also makes the honest point that what suits one person won't suit another.

My child has eczema. Can they use this?

It's made with sensitive and eczema-prone skin in mind, and zinc oxide is the only active ingredient. It isn't a treatment for eczema and we won't pretend otherwise. Patch test a small area first, avoid broken or weeping skin, and if your child is under a doctor or dermatologist for their skin, run it past them before you start.

How do I patch test it?

Put a small amount on a patch of calm skin, like the inner forearm, and leave it for 24 hours before using it more widely. Do this on a day when their skin is settled rather than mid-flare, so you get a clear answer.

Is it fragranced?

There's no synthetic fragrance and no added perfume. It does contain small amounts of organic plant oils and extracts as part of the formula, which is why the patch test matters on reactive skin. The full ingredient list is on the product page below.

What age can they start?

It suits skin from 6 months. For babies under 6 months, the usual advice is shade, clothing and hats rather than sunscreen, so check with your doctor or maternal health nurse first.

What's the difference between Sensitive and Sport?

Both are SPF50 zinc formulas. Sensitive uses non-nano zinc oxide and is built around gentle, soothing organic ingredients for reactive skin and little ones. Sport is the same SPF, tuned for heavy sweat and long sessions outdoors. Plenty of families keep both.

Will it sting their eyes?

It's a no-sting formula, which is one of the main reasons kids refuse sunscreen at all. As with any sunscreen, don't apply it directly into the eyes, and rinse with water if it gets in.

Will it leave them white?

No. It's a clear zinc with a lightweight, non-whitening texture. Rub it on rather than working it in hard, and give it a minute to settle.

Does it have titanium dioxide or preservatives?

Neither. Sensitive is free from titanium dioxide, preservatives, parabens, silicone, petroleum and aluminium, and it isn't tested on animals.

How much should I put on?

More than most people do. As a guide, about a teaspoon for the face and neck and a teaspoon per limb for an adult, scaled down for a child. Apply 20 minutes before going out, then reapply every two hours and after swimming, sweating or towel drying.
